Markthal Rotterdam

Stockholm, Barcelona, Valencia, Copenhagen. Almost every large city has one: an indoor food market. And since October 2014 we can add Rotterdam to this list with the ‘Markthal’ (Market Hall). A lively market hall, which is bursting at the seams with fresh fish, warm bread, tender meat, countless different cheeses and freshly harvested vegetables. A wonderful experience, go and see it, full stop.

Shopping, dining, parking, working and living under a spectacular arch
The food market has the size of a massive football pitch; with, in the heart of the market floor, more than 100 fresh produce units from all the food branches, and supplemented with flowers and plants. In the flanks of the arch, also on the 1st floor, food shops and restaurants and even a cookery school.

The arch itself contains 228 unique rental and sale apartments. Underneath the ground floor are a supermarket, a logistics centre for entrepreneurs and 1200 parking places. The inside of the arched hall has a canvas of an impressive 11,000-m2 piece of art. The artwork is by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam.

In conclusion: it really is a surprising combination of architecture, food, shopping, eating, working and living. Architect Winy Maas is responsible for this amazing building. Chapeau!

Thanks for stopping by, have a happy Sunday!
